The unique photos by Oleg Malyovanyj

The unique photos by Oleg Malyovanyj

Oleg Malyovanyj - is one of the founders of the Kharkov School of Photography.

He belongs for special category of photographers who, by trial and experiment, created something new; that went beyond the concept of a 'beautiful picture' and was different from the usual forms of the time. As Oleg said: “It was the era of “ photo trick ”, and it all started with pseudo-polarization (using contrast paper and film flare for the second time) in 1965. The first series of photos came out with this effect. Basically, there were black and white pictures. From the late 60s, Oleg began to make installations, and from the 70s - collages, bold, to some extent even epatage work. Unfortunately, many of them were not destined to be seen by the public. Because in 1979, Oleg had a fire at home. Then almost all the negatives, archives, records burned; there are a couple of dozen slides, some collages and vintage works. But on the other hand, this made them even more unique.

So, these most valuable and miraculously saved works are presented in our gallery.

I want to tell you about one of them, the unique work “The Country of Grass”, made in the technique of “color equidensity”. It is the first one (from three another copies) and the only one, printed on paper, a sibachrome, which hasn’t produced now.

We asked Oleg to talk about technology a little more. He responds:

“There were only two people who used this technique in the USSR ... it never even occurred to anyone. At first I was interested in the scientific processing of images of the Earth from space. There it was necessary not only to separate the entire range of gradations of white and black, but it was necessary to find the isogelium boundary. Then the experiments began. At that time it was not possible to translate the slide into a photo, I’m generally silent about scanners. I increased the slide to a negative 30x40 through a magnifier on colored paper, then showed it and printed it with a contact. For the equipment, the equilibria needed a special frame, where a working film was holed using a special technology ... In general, the process was very laborious! I also needed a high-contrast b/w material, a 6x6 or 6x9 enlarger ... then this film material was printed in different exposures ... I also had to do 4 doubles of negatives and 4 doubles of positives by the contact method ... it all worked out in a certain sequence (diagonally and in different ways) and finally printed ... and it turned out 4 options for light-shadows .. and it's all just for one picture!

In this technique, I only have about 20 pictures taken from 1969 to 1975. Then the suffered series “Burnt Time”

was born from the remaining negatives after the fire ... "

Arises the question: “Why not renew this technique and do not continue on to do such pictures?”

The photographer honestly answers us: "There are no longer any negatives that would work like this ... and the time is different now ... it won't work out."
